I feel like I know you so well. Mum used to talk about you all the time when I was growing up. But I’m getting ahead of myself; you probably don’t even know who I am! My name is Lily Miller Bear. You used to know my mother, Louise Miller.

You must be wondering why Mum stopped writing to you so suddenly. I know she felt guilty about dropping all her old friends. So, when I found your letters to her, I felt compelled to write and explain. Mum always described you as her best friend. I’m sure she would have done this herself but she can’t any more. You see, I’m sorry to tell you Mum passed away some time ago. Let me tell you how it happened.

I don’t think Mum was ever truly happy. We laughed together and had fun but I always had the impression she felt something was missing from her life.

Louise and Lily Laughing Together

Mum and Dad would argue a lot. Don’t get me wrong – they loved each other but Dad always wanted to get married and Mum didn’t. I never really understood why Mum clung to her unmarried state but I suppose it was her one rebellion against society. I used to hate it when my parents fought.

Louise and Aiden Argue

Mum regretted dropping out of University and she gradually dropped all her friends from her younger days. I think Mum also resented her own mother, Grandma Emma. Do you remember my Grandma Emma? When I was little, I was scared of her - she always seemed so strict and aloof.

"Grandma" Emma

But now I’m older I can see just how strong and loving my grandmother was. She worked hard to bring up my mother on her own. I remember her telling me how difficult it was during the war years. It seems all the women in my family have had a tough time. Or perhaps we’re all just too damn stubborn and ambitious to accept things the way they are! It all began with my great, great grandma Doris Ford. According to family legend she was a bit ahead of her time and was always encouraging her daughter to be independent. Though I reckon even great great grandma was a bit shocked when her daughter eloped! Oh how I wish I’d known my great grandma Victoria. She must have been quite a character. Not only did she elope but she subsequently separated from her husband. You can imagine how shocking that was in late Victorian times.

"Great Great Grandma" Doris

"Great Grandma" Victoria

Then there was my grandma Emma. Of course you know all about how she lost her husband during the war and brought up Mum on her own. But did you know she was part of the suffragette movement and campaigned for women’s rights? No wonder Mum grew up feeling like she couldn’t live up to Grandma Emma’s expectations.

And so that brings me back to Mum and how she passed away. It was all a horrible accident. At least I believe it was an accident, others like to gossip and say differently… Anyway, I came home early from school one day to find smoke pouring out of the kitchen window. My first instinct was to find Mum. I knew she had been depressed again and taking a lot of pills. I was afraid she may have fallen asleep and left some food to burn. So I rushed towards the house.

Lily Comes Home from School

As I opened the door I was hit by a wall of heat and that was all I remembered for a while. Apparently one of the neighbours saved me. But they were too late to help Mum. She was found curled up on the kitchen floor. There was an investigation into her death and the verdict was accidental suffocation due to smoke inhalation.

Louise is Found

It all happened more than 10 years ago but it still hurts to remember. Dad and I moved soon after we lost Mum. We were both a bit of a mess for a while and wanted to escape all the gossip. Besides, we had no reason to stay in the area. Grandma had died just a few months before Mum and so we had no living family left in Homelands. We travelled for several years. Dad could always find work as a doctor and we were comfortable enough. Slowly, I came to terms with losing Mum though I don’t think Dad ever got over her death. We ended up in the United States and I like it here. This is a country of possibilities and new beginnings. I think my grandma and great grandma would have liked America.

So that is our story. I hope you can forgive Mum for not staying in touch. I think she was unhappy and found it hard to see her old friends from University. If you feel like writing, I would love to hear from you and I would especially like to hear all about Mum’s younger years. My address is at the top the letter. I am living in a place called Bluewater and I am happy here. I graduated from University last year but have no great ambitions other than raising a large and happy family. Which is ironic given that my female ancestors fought so hard for women’s rights. I hope they all approve of my decisions in life.

Thank you for sparing the time to read this letter.

With love from,

Lily Miller Bear.

-------- *** --------

This is the end of my Rights of Women challenge. I have moved Lily to a new Bluewater neighbourhood where she is the founder of a new challenge. I apologise for the long delay between the previous update and this final chapter. I have no excuses except for the fact that sometimes Real Life takes priority over my Sims' lives! I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge and found it interesting, especially in the first couple of generations where the restrictions forced me to play my sims quite differently. I mean how am I going to explain to Mum about you know what? But so far it's been fine. Mum is happy to have me home and she accepted Aiden without too many questions.

Louise Hugs her Mother

But it’s only a matter of time before I begin to show. Then what?

Give me a call when you get back from Uni. I really miss you and I need someone to talk to before Mum drives me crazy!!

Hugs and kisses,

Louise.

-------- *** --------

1, New Court,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Meadow,

Well, Mum knows everything now. And you’ll never believe it - she’s kicking me out of the house! I guess it didn’t help that Mum found Aiden and I in bed together. Well, it was Mum’s bed to be precise. Which I suppose only made things worse.

Louise and Aiden

The other surprising thing is how Aiden behaved when we told Mum our news. But let me start from the beginning. First, I spoke to Mum on my own. I waited until she was in a good mood and asked if I could have a chat. I was praying she’d be happy about being a grandmother and would overlook my unmarried state.

Louise Talks to Emma

But Mum is obviously far more old-fashioned than I thought. She said she wouldn’t harbour an unmarried mother under her roof. I mean it’s the sixties for Christ’s sake not the twenties! Can’t a woman make her own choices now?

Anyway, when Aiden heard the row he decided to speak with Mum on my behalf.

Aiden Speaks with Emma

It was really sweet. He said he loved me and would stick by me. He knew we were both young and that’s why we didn’t intend to get married yet.

Aiden and Emma

Then I had the biggest shock of all. Aiden said he had changed his mind and wanted to marry me. Can you believe it! Whatever happened to Free Love?

So there I was, with my Mum and Aiden both looking at me expectantly. I didn’t know what to do. But I did know I couldn’t have this baby on my own. I begged for more time and Aiden agreed. Mum wasn’t happy though – she can’t understand why I didn’t immediately accept a perfectly good marriage proposal form the man I love.

Oh how I miss you, Meadow. And how I wish I hadn’t got myself into this mess.

Please visit soon.

Hugs and kisses,

Louise.

-------- *** --------

3, New Court,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Meadow,

Well, we moved house but not very far! My Grandma left me her house.

Louise and Aiden at Home

Do you remember my Grandma Victoria? She was so cool. Did you know she eloped with her lover when she was just eighteen? Later she left her husband when she found him cheating. My Mum was just a baby and she never really knew her Dad. Grandma was such a strong woman and she didn’t care about convention. She even found a second love and married him later in life. I wish Grandma was here today, I know she’d understand me.

Victoria and Louise, taken when Louise was a Teen

Anyway, back to my news. Aiden has started work and is now a nice, respectable Doctor.

Aiden Looks for Work

I guess I should be grateful one of us graduated from university and can get a decent job. Though I don’t really blame Uni for kicking me out. Let’s face it - I missed every single lecture in my last couple of semesters! Mind you, I joke now, but don’t make the same mistake I did, Meadow. It’s no fun being married and a mother at 22 when all your friends are enjoying the freedoms of the new decade.

Mum visits occasionally. She’s excited about being a Grandma and I think she’s forgiven me for dropping out of university.

Louise (pregnant) and Emma

She’s still upset about Aiden and I being unmarried. Sometimes, I think she’s such a hypocrite. After all, Mum once campaigned for women's rights. Besides, she met my Dad in University and he was her Professor! Imagine if that happened now – a Professor would lose his job if he hooked up with a student. But I suppose Mum is just disappointed I’m not going to follow in her footsteps and become something big in politics.

Well, that’s all my news. I can’t wait to see you at Christmas. I’m getting really big now – I don’t think you will recognise me!

Hugs and kisses,

Lousie

-------- *** --------

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT

WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE BIRTH OF OUR DAUGHTER

LILY MILLER BEAR

APRIL 3, 1970

7 POUNDS, 3 OUNCES

Louise and Baby Lily

-------- *** --------

Contents Next

Generation 3 - Coping Alone

TELEGRAM

I DEEPLY REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT YOUR HUSBAND, LIEUTENANT KOREY BEAR, DIED JANUARY 3RD, 1945 IN THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS DUTY AND SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY. Louise is doing well - I can hardly believe she is already 6 months old.

Emma and Louise

However, I have some bad news. I did not want to tell you but I’ve been forced to step down as Mayor. As soon as the council heard about my pregnancy, they demanded that I relinquish my position. It would seem that women don’t quite have equal rights with men. At least not once we become mothers. Of course, I argued, but there was little I could do.

And in honour of my new position as mother and housewife, I have updated my look. I know how you hated my twenties bob and so I’m sure you’ll be happy with the results.

Emma’s New Look

You asked about Korey. Yes – he has been called up and he reports for duty next week. We had thought he would not be drafted due to his age but when his papers arrived, Korey was determined to do his duty by the country. After losing my big brother during the last war, I fear the same will happen to my husband in this new war. Please pray for us both.

I hope Earnest recovers soon. I look forward to your next letter and hearing how life is with you.

All my Love,

Emma.

-------- *** --------

1, New Court,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mummy,

Will this War never end? The rationing at home has become impossible. And with so many men away at war, more and more women are returning to work. In fact, I decided it was time to contribute and have joined the Women’s Auxillary Air Force. I work at the nearby air base and my duties are varied. It’s exciting work and I am glad to being doing my part for the war effort.

Emma Leaves for her new Job

It is difficult for Louise growing up without her father. Korey has only been home once and he’s become a stranger to Louise. It can be lonely at home with just the two of us.

Emma and Louise

I am also concerned about Lousie’s behaviour - she is growing a little wild. She needs a father’s discipline, or perhaps I am away from home too much. Whatever the problem she is continually getting into trouble and was nearly expelled from her new Private School. I have to stand over her to make sure she completes her homework.

Louise Doing her Homework

The women of our family have always been strong-willed. But I fear that Louise will one day take things a step too far. But perhaps I worry too much.

Well, that is all my news. Please write soon and give my love to Earnest.

Much Love,

Emma.

Contents Next

Generation 3 - Goodbye Edward

1, New Court,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mummy,

Have you heard from Edward? I am worried, the War ended over a month ago and still no word from him. Uncle George arrived home last week but he had no news from Edward. It seems like only yesterday that we said our goodbyes and Edward left for war.

Edward Leaves for War

Pleas write immediately you receive word from him.

I am sorry I didn’t tell you about the Professor. I was terribly worried that you wouldn’t approve of my “older man”. Edward kept teasing me; saying you would never understand. Women finally have equal voting rights with men! It is a wonderful achievement but also an anticlimax. The women’s suffrage movement gave me a reason to campaign. Now we’ve achieved our aims, what to do? Korey is pressing me to have children and I won't deny my body clock is ticking. But somehow I feel I have missed out on a glittering career. I remember when I was a little girl, how you used to talk about your dreams of being a Great Scientist. Then when I won my place at university, you were so proud of me. And what have I made of myself? Assistant teacher and ex-political campaigner.

Forgive me, Mummy. I don’t mean to go on. Korey and I am happy, I love my job and we have a beautiful new home.

Emma’s House

Although, one of my suffragette friends has asked me to help her campaign for a new prospective Member of Parliament. Yes, Edward has written and told me all. Now don’t be angry with your brother. He is only concerned about your safety. I promise not to interfere with your actions. As you know I sympathise with the suffragettes and share many of their views. It is just that I do not agree with some of their methods. Apparently Emmeline Pankhurst has been imprisoned again. I would hate for you to end up in a similar situation. So, please be careful. Enough, I will not say another word on the matter.

I am excited to hear you have met a nice young man. Why do you tell me so little about him? I am glad that you and Edward are both safe at University.

I look forward to your next letter.

All my love,

Mummy.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest George,

I hope this letter reaches you before you leave for Africa. I am writing to beg a favour of you. Edward is talking about leaving University and joining the armed forces. Please would you speak with him before you leave? I know Edward will listen to you. All I ask is for him to finish his studies. If he then chooses to join the War then so be it.

All is well at home. Earnest is a regular visitor and I sometimes struggle to keep him at arm’s length.

Victoria and Earnest

I pray you may return safely from the troubles in Africa.

Your loving sister,

Victoria.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear George,

I thank you with all my heart for persuading Edward to stay at University. It was wonderful to see both my children graduate and Edward was delighted when you appeared for the ceremony. Although I regret you were injured in Africa, I am thankful it allowed our family some precious moments together. I am sending you some pictures from the graduation.

Emma and Edward Graduate

Emma and Edward are now back home. However, my worst fear has been realised; Edward has joined the army and leaves for training in one week’s time. So many sons and husbands have already been lost in this dreadful War. I can only pray that Edward will return home safely.

I have further news for you. It is good news but I have saved it for last as I am not sure how you will react. As you know, Cyd was one of the many to fall during the Battle of the Somme. I can not say that I miss him but am sad that he and the children were never reconciled. Nevertheless, Cyd’s death freed me to follow my heart and the day before my 60th Birthday Earnest and I were married.

Edward Plays the Piano at the Ceremony

The Vows

The Guests

Victoria and Earnest

Emma Congratulates her Mother

I am sorry you could not join us on our special day. However, I have jumped the Edwardian period and moved forward in time to the reign of King George V (1910 - 1936).

World War I, also known as the Great War, occurred between 1914 and 1918. Early fighting took place in Africa bewen the various colonies. Later, many significant battles took place in Somme in France. The largest battle of all was "The Battle of The Somme", which happened in 1916 and saw more than 1 million casualties.

The next chapters will be set in the 1920s and 1930s.

Contents Next

Generation 2 - Farewells

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

My Dearest Brother,

I cannot begin to tell you how much we all enjoyed your recent visit.

Victoria greets George

The children haven’t stopped talking about their Uncle George. Much has happened since you left and I sorely need your advice. Do you remember the Merchant boys? Well, Poppa has taken to inviting them for dinner again. And one guest in particular has been lingering after everyone else has retired.

Victoria and Earnest Merchant

I find myself enjoying Earnest’s company far more than I did as a girl. He is gentle and charming, nothing at all like Cyd. The strangest thing of all is that Poppa seems to be encouraging our friendship. This is so odd since he never allowed Mama to have male friends. Oh George, it’s all very confusing. Just a short time ago I was living with my husband and bringing up 2 small children. Now I am back in my childhood home entertaining strange men.

Please write soon. I miss you and look forward to your next visit.

Your dear sister,

Victoria.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest George,

Thank you for your last letter - I love to hear your tales of India. It all sounds terribly exciting and I long to See The World as you do. Mind you life has been more than a little exciting here in Homelands. Do you remember Earnest? I told you all about him in my last letter. Well things have developed between us.

Victoria and Earnest

Oh I know, George. I am technically a married woman and my behaviour is disgraceful! But he is warm, kind and understanding. I have been enjoying his company immensely. Then just a short time ago, he asked to see me in the parlour. Poor Earnest, he looked rather nervous.

Earnest Speaks with Victoria

Then, without any warning, Earnest declared his love for me and asked for my hand in marriage! It was dreadfully sweet, nothing like Cyd’s whirlwind romance and proposal. But, yes, there was one small problem. I was still a married woman. What was I to do? Earnest was offering me a second chance in life - an opportunity to once again be mistress of my own home. And I think I was rather beginning to fall in love with him. But first I had to deal with Cyd…

Victoria Greets Cyd

I wasted no time and asked Cyd for a divorce.

Cyd is Angry

He did not take it at all well. Cyd reminded me that divorce was a man’s decision and he wasn’t minded to divorce me. Can you believe it?! I was seething with anger.

Victoria and Cyd

How could he refuse me a divorce? Cyd was the one who cheated on me. But that is a woman’s lot. And so my situation is unchanged. I am tied to Cyd “until death do us part” even though he will not live with me and spares little time for his children.

Nevertheless, dear Earnest is a comfort to me. He faithfully visits each day and says he will wait for me as long as necessary.

Earnest Visits for Dinner

*sigh* I must end here. Mama is unwell and I hear her calling. I will write again soon.

Your loving sister,

Victoria.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest George,

What a sad time. I am sorry your last visit was so fleeting. We had little time together, I was too taken up with the funeral arrangements. Although it grieves me, I am glad Mama and Poppa passed away within days of each other. I can't imagine how either would have lived without the other.

I miss them both greatly, I even miss Poppa’s strictness. I visit their gravesides weekly and tell them all about our day to day lives.

Victoria Visits her Parents’ Graves

But amidst our grief I have some good news. Edward and Emma have been accepted into University! I am very proud, especially of Emma, who will be one of just 2 girls in her class.

It was difficult saying goodbye to the children.

Victoria and Edward

Victoria and Emma

But the time soon came for them both to leave. The house is quiet now, with Mama, Poppa, and the children gone. My life seems quite empty.

I miss you, George.

Your dear sister,

Victoria.

Contents Next

Generation 2 - Separation

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest George,

My life is a disaster! As you can see, I am writing this from Victoria Street. Yes, I have moved back home with Mama and Poppa. Your stupid sister has totally ruined her life. But let me tell it from the beginning.

Life was good, if a little dull. My world revolved around Edward and Emma.

Victoria and Edward

Victoria and Emma

I was even considering studying again. There is a local Women’s college and I was interested in their Botany course. However, Cyd disapproved and declared that married women should not study. I swear he was becoming more and more like father. When I first met Cyd he was so carefree and accepting. I thought he loved me for who I was. But now he refused to acknowledge that I may have an understanding of Scientific Matters. So, foolish woman that I am, I gave up my college application.

Meanwhile, Cyd was seeking the company of Anne Parsons. Do you remember Mrs Parsons? Mama was very friendly with her but Poppa disapproved and said that she was a bit “racy”. Anyway, Anne Parsons was always visiting. She even celebrated Edward’s birthday with us.

Cyd greets Anne

Edward Grows Up

Of course, I didn’t suspect anything. Anne is Mama’s age (even if she doesn't look it) and she acted very pleasantly towards me. But then one day, I returned home to discover Cyd and Anne in a compromising position…

Cyd and Anne

I was devastated and acted on instinct.. .

Victoria Reacts to Cyd’s Infidelity

Then the worst possible thing happened. Edward walked in and saw everything.

Edward is Devastated

My poor boy, he won’t he even speak to his father now.

I didn’t know what to do. How was I going to face Mama and Poppa? They still didn’t like Cyd and Poppa hadn’t forgiven me for eloping in the first place. So, I begged Cyd to forget Anne and return to his family. I was unhappy but I couldn’t face the shame of a separation. But that dreadful woman had her claws into Cyd. He said that he was sorry but he didn’t love me anymore. Just like that! And so I packed my bags and moved back home with the children.

Victoria and Emma

Mama and Poppa have been surprisingly understanding. I can tell that Poppa is embarrassed by my separation but he is putting on a brave face and is being very kind to me. Perhaps his grandchildren have softened his heart?

Well that is all my news. Please, please come home soon. Your sister needs you!

All my love,

Victoria.

Contents Next

Generation 2 - Families

1, Hyacinth Avenue,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mama,

I was elated when Cyd first told me about your visit. And a medal of honour! But when are you going to come home and visit your family? You have a tiny nephew and niece who long to meet their Uncle George, the war hero! Seriously, George, please come home soon. I miss you. I care for the little ones while Cyd spends most of his time using our latest acquisition - the telephone. You cannot hate me for following my heart. I miss you and Poppa and even the boys are ignoring my letters. Please write back and tell me that you forgive me.

Did you not notice that something had changed before I left home? I sat for hours in the parlour agonising over my decision to elope with Cyd.

Victoria Thinks Before Eloping

I was growing up. My body was changing and so were my feelings.

Victoria Growing Up

But Poppa was determined that I should marry one of the Merchant boys. Yet how could I? They are all much older than me and so stiff and formal. Cyd is quite different. He is good and kind and not at all the monster you think him. I love him, Mama, and I did what I had to so that we could be together.

I hope that you find it in your heart to forgive me.

Your wayward daughter,

Victoria.

-------- *** --------

1, Hyacinth Avenue,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear George,

I expect that you have already heard my News from the family? Yes, your twin sister is in Big Trouble this time! But please listen to my side of the story before you form any judgement. It all started when a school friend introduced me to a mysterious Gypsy woman.

Victoria and The Gypsy Woman

The Gypsy promised that if I crossed her palm with silver then I would find love. Well, how could I resist? The Merchant boys were so tiresome and I was desparate to meet someone new. So, that was how I first met Cyd Roseland.

Victoria meets Cyd

Cyd was different to the men that Poppa brought home. Cyd works in the Science Field and he treats me as an equal. Yet, he is also romantic and fun and exciting. However, I knew Poppa would never accept Cyd. Poppa had his heart set on my marrying a wealthy Lawyer or other Professional. Luckily, Mama and Poppa seemed to be enjoying their own second honeymoon period.

Doris and Harold in Love Again

So, I took advantage of their distraction to elope with Cyd. Oh George, I can't tell you how exciting it was! I left home in the early hours of the morning and Cyd met me at the end of Victoria Street. He had booked tickets to Scotland and we spent the most romantic weekend away together. The day he asked me to marry him was the happiest day of my life.

Cyd proposes to Victoria

We have now returned to Homelands and moved into a sweet house not far from Victoria Street. I hope that Momma will forgive me one day and will come and visit. The only troublesome thing about my new life is Cyd's dog. He worships the smelly creature almost as much as he worships me.

Cyd and His Dog

So what about your news? Are you still distinguishing yourself in the Crimea? Do you remember when we were young and we used to dream about a life of adventure? I miss you, George, and wish you were here to share adventures with and laugh about life.

Your loving sister,

Victoria.

-------- *** --------

1, Hyacinth Avenue,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mama,

I understand your continued silence, although I find it hard to accept. I would not be writing to you except that I have important news. You are going to be a Grandma. Yes, Mama, I am pregnant.

Victoria is Pregnant

Will you not visit now? If not for my sake then for the sake of your first grandchild?

Your patient daughter,

Victoria.

Contents Next

Generation 1 - Finding a Husband

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mama,

I hope that this letter finds you happy and well. You gave us all such a fright with your last illness and I pray for your good health. Now I must tell you all my Family News. The children are growing up quickly. The twins are the best of friends and sometimes a little boisterous.

George Playing in the Kitchen

George and Victoria Playing as Teens

I worry that Victoria is influenced by her brothers and is not learning lady like manners. Yet it warms my heart to see how close George and Victoria are. George is playful but protective towards his twin sister and I am certain that he will always look out for her after Harold and I have gone.

I was sorry that you could not join our party to the Great Exhibition. It was quite fascinating and Victoria especially took a great interest in the Scientific Exhibits.

Victoria Tries the Money Machine

George is Energized

Harold Examines a Weather Machine

Victoria begged her father to acquire one of the machines for our home. However, Harold was quite shocked and admonished Victoria for her improper interest in Scientific Matters. Of couse, Harold is correct. But Mama, I wish you could have seen some of the Machines on display. The Exhibition was magnificent.

I must finish here, dear Mama. We are expecting the Merchant boys for dinner and I must begin preparations. Please write soon and give my love to Papa.

Your loving daughter,

Doris.

****** / ******

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

My dearest Sister,

Wasn't the Great Exhibition wonderful? All those amazing machines. I only wish that we could have taken some of them home. Just imagine how much easier life would be with one of those Energizers. Perhaps our children will grow up to benefit from all of these new inventions? Although, I was ever so embarrassed when the twins became a little too playful in public.

George and Victoria Earn a Disapproving Glare

But I suppose times are changing and young people behave quite differently to the way we were bought up.

Now, I must tell you more about the Merchant boys. As you know Harold and I find them quite enchanting, if a little unconventional. Just a few months ago, one of the boys fell asleep at the Dinner Table. Well, I had no idea what to do and so at Harold's urging I left him to sleep. And would you believe it - he was still fast asleep at breakfast time!

George Merchant Sleeps after Dinner

The Following Morning

George Wakes and Finishes his Dinner

It was dreadfully amusing. Although I think Harold was a little taken aback and he now views George Merchant in a less favorable light. I am certain that he hopes to marry Victoria to one of the Merchant boys. He insists that it is our duty to find Victoria a good husband. Unfortunately, Victoria does not show the slightest interest in finding a husband. She says that it is now quite acceptable for a young girl to take a job and choose her own husband. Her father is furious and refused to speak to Victoria for two days. Oh how I wish that Harold wasn't quite so old fashioned. And the Merchants are such charming and handsome young men. If only Victoria would fall in love with one of them and then the whole problem would be resolved.

Well, I think that is enough musings from me. Please write soon and tell me all your news.

Your Dear Sister,

Doris.

****** / ******

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

My dearest Sister,

I will keep this letter brief as I have much to do. However, I simply must share my news with you. Victoria and George are both preparing to fly the nest. I am saddened yet so proud of them both. George is to join the army. He leaves immediately for the Black Sea - they say that war is brewing in the Crimea. For a long time, Victoria insisted that she would follow him. She was determined to become a nurse, just like Florence Nightingale. I know that Miss Nightingale is very brave and comes from a most respectable family. But I confess that I sided with Harold when he forbade her to leave. It would break my heart to have my only daughter experience the horrors of war. I thought that Victoria and her father were on the verge of another Great Row but then Victoira had a complete change of heart. And I am certain that I know why - the new light in her eyes and spring in her step can mean only one thing.

Victoria is in love!

I am not sure who her new suitor might be. Certainly, our neighbours are taking a keen interest now that Victoria is growing up.

Victoria and Earnest

Victoria and Michael

Victoria and George

However, you can be assured that I will write you as soon as I find out more.

Your loving sister,

Doris.

Contents Next

Generation 1 - All About Victoria

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mama,

I was concerned to hear about your illness and pray that this letter finds you in better health. I will do my best to cheer you with news of my family and their wellbeing. The children are delightful and send you their best regards. Victoria is attending the All Girls Grammar School. She studies hard and is proud of her school results. I remind her that a good education and many accomplishments will help her find a good husband. Sometimes I worry that she takes too much interest in Scientific Matters but I expect that comes from growing up with three older brothers.

Victoria Studying at Home

Victoria Shows Off Her School Report

Apart from her Scientific Interests, Victoria is everything I could wish for in a dutiful daughter. The pie was a great success and even Harold asked for more. My last pregnancy was much easier then the first and Harold was delighted to have a second son. We have called him William after Harold's grandfather.

As you know I wished very much for a daughter. I am praying for a girl.

Please give my love to Papa and the girls.

Your loving daughter,

Doris.

****** / ******

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest Sister,

Congratulations on your recent betrothal. I am very excited for you and pray that you will be as happy in your marriage as I have been in mine. Your Albert sounds like a very kind and handsome man. I am sure that he will take good care of you. Now, onto my news. My third pregnancy was not so easy. William was a demanding toddler and it was difficult to cope with two sons, a husband and yet another pregancy. I sometimes wish that we could afford help at home but I know that a dutiful wife shouldn't complain.

I was relieved when the last day of my pregnancy arrived. But most surprised when I was told that I was having two babies!! My first was another boy, George, and then at last a girl! We have called her Victoria in honour of our good Queen.

The Twins are Born

It was difficult looking after twins and sometimes I fell behind with the housework.

I have also started a small vegetable garden which takes time to look after. Mama sent me some tomato seeds but I'm not sure that my tomatoes are going to turn out as tasty as Mama's.

My two oldest boys are growing up fast. Harry is now a teenager and hopes to follow his father into Business. Luckily, William is still young enough to help his Mama around the house. Harold insists that as soon as the boys turn thirteen, they become men and start work. This also means that they cannot help me around the home as it is not suitable for a man to be doing woman's work. I love and respect Harold but sometimes wonder whether women might have just a little more freedom.

One of my hardest tasks, is keeping enough food on the table. The boys all have healthy appetites and mealtimes are lively.

I must finish now, dear sister. Please forgive my complaining, I am blessed to have 4 beautiful children and a husband that cares for me. And I must remember that.

I wish you every happiness as you start out in your new marriage.

Your dear and loving sister,

Doris.

Contents Next

Table of Contents

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Rules

1. Harold is very kind to me and I am working hard to keep the home clean as you taught me. Here is a painting of our new home.

We have very nice neighbours and I have befriended a widowed lady who is advising me on how to be a proper Victorian wife. It is not the same as having you here, Mama, but she is a comfort to me.

Doris Greets the Neighbours

Lastly, Harold has accepted a good job in Business. As you know, Harold is a youngest son and can not rely on an inheritance for a living. But he promises that he will give me a good life and take care of me.

Harold finds a Job in Business

Our home is very small and we can not afford help. Please write soon, I long to hear all your news.

Your dutiful daughter,

Doris.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dearest Sister,

Yes, I am married at last. It is wonderful! The freedom of running my own home is better then I could ever have imagined. Obviously, our house is very modest. However, I am certain that Harold will be a great success in Business and one day we will own a large house with a beautiful garden.

Harold is ever so romantic, he insisted on carrying me over the threshold on our first day home.

And *giggles* he kisses me in the corridor in a most charming manner.

Although he does wear underwear just like Papas which I don't like very much. But apart from the underwear, married life is simply bliss. I was a bit scared before my wedding nght but I promise you it is nothing at all to be nervous about.

I have also made a new friend but please don't tell Mama. Her name is Anne Parsons. She is older then me and has two children. She tells the wildest tales - she goes shopping in town on her own and even has male friends! Please, please don't tell Mama or Papa, I just know they won't approve of her.

Doris Greets Anne Parsons

I must finish now. I miss you very much and look forward to your visit soon.

Your dear sister,

Doris.

-------- *** --------

1, Victoria Street,
Homelands,
ENGLAND.

Dear Mama,

Wonderful news! Harold Junior was born on the 5th day of May and he and I are both healthy. I wish that you had been with me for the birth. I was scared and wanted my Mama. But you will be glad to know that all is well and that Harold Senior is proud of his son. We call him Harry and he is the sweetest thing.

Although, Mama, I am very angry with you. Why did you not warn me about the pregnancy? I was permanently hungry and tired and *blushes* needed to relieve myself all the time. I do not mean to complain. But I have heard that there are machines and plants that can help with pregnancy. Why will you not let me try these things?

But now Harry is here, I am ever so happy. It took an age to teach him to use the potty. And he was ever so slow to walk and talk (not achieving these feats until childhood). I hope that he isn't stupid like his Uncle Marty (Harold's brother). But Harold assures me that it is quite normal for a toddler to grow up without learning to walk or talk.

Come on Harry - you can do it!

And on the 5th or 6th Attempt - Success!

I do hope that you and Papa can visit soon. I am pregnant again and this time I hope for a little girl. I am also learning to meditate as I am told that this can help ease the discomforts of pregnancy. I am sure that you can not disapprove of meditation.

Please give my love to all the family.

Your dutiful daughter,

Doris.

Contents Next

Rules

The idea is to start with a single male/female couple and progress through the historial trends of womens' rights, using the female offspring of each generation to push the family forward until we arrive at modern woman.

The original rules can be found here (you need to be a member of TS2Challenges group). If you're not a TS2Challenges member then don't worry. A summary of the rules is below with my own amendments in yellow

I plan to incorporate a different (if not historically accurate) look and feel to each generation as follows...

THE OUTLINE

- Make a male and female couple in CAS; they can be set as married or wed later.
- Once they are married, begin to Try For a Baby until they have at least one female child (code name - Child A).
- Treat the original couple using the rules of Generation One (see below).
- Raise Child A, using the rules for Generation Two (see below).
- When she is an adult, she will marry and have at least one female child (Child B).
- Raise Child B using the rules of Generation Three (see below).
- When she is an adult, have her marry and have at least one female child (Child C).
- Raise Child C using the rules of Generation Four (see below).
- When she is an adult, have her marry and have at least one female child (Child D).
- Raise Child D with the rules for Generation Five (see below).

Generation Five is the end of the challenge.

- Note: each female continues living her life using the rules of the generation she was born into. For example, Child B is the generation three sim; when she has Child C, she must continue living using the rules of generation three until her death, even though Child C is now generation four and living by those rules.

GENERATION ONE - EARLY VICTORIAN
<br
